Rarely, Nicolas Buffet took charge of the curatorship and scenography of Bernard Buffet differently. “I made this decision after meeting Alexis and Giulia Pentcheff and this magnificent place, facing the sea, which I fell in love with. A small museum… It made sense right away to accept their proposal to hold a monographic exhibition on my father there.“For gallery owners at the port of Malmousque, in Marseille,”it’s important to work with artists’ families. Who could talk better about Bernard Buffet than Nicolas?“. This musician affirms it, “it is a desire but above all a duty to highlight the work of my father, a painter as famous as he is little-known“.

How did you think about this exhibition?

I chose around twenty paintings, mainly from the 80s and 90s, which come from the family, my sisters and myself. My father created a very complex, very strong work and very often very poorly shown. And if it is shown poorly, the works oppose each other and create deep discomfort for the viewer. In this exhibition, we have chosen to create a break since we will have a whole part dedicated to the Mediterranean, to Provence, to echo the place, and a second more rock’n’roll part, where we will show nudes and monkeys. My father had an exhibitionMy monkeysincredible paintings of primates with very touching and disarming expressions.
