Looking for reinforcements to shape a squad capable of competing for the podium in Ligue 1, Olympique de Marseille inquired about the situation of Mason Greenwood. Back from loan but unwanted at Manchester United, the Englishman with a sulphurous reputation pleases the Marseille club but his possible arrival is anything but confirmed.

Will the new enfant terrible of English football arrive in France? After briefly welcoming Joey Barton during the 2012-2013 season, OM is looking at another Englishman with a tarnished reputation: Mason Greenwood.

As stated by The Athletic and confirmed by RMC Sport, the Marseille club is interested in the Manchester United player, returning from a loan to Getafe. Unwanted by the Red Devils, the 22-year-old winger will not be retained by the recent eighth in the Premier League in the event of an interesting offer for his former prodigy. What if he was the first strike of the De Zerbi era at OM. But be careful, we are still far from that.

Greenwood has relaunched well in Spain

While some OM fans will fondly remember his participation in one of PSG’s historic Champions League defeats (the 1-3 defeat at the Parc des Princes in March 2019), others will regret his extra-sporting past. Before spending the 2023-2024 season on loan at Getafe, Mason Greenwood was thus sidelined from the Manchester squad for more than 580 days after accusations of attempted rape and assault in England.

Ultimately not sanctioned by the courts, the proceedings having been abandoned, the 22-year-old Englishman bounced back in La Liga last September. A success crowned with ten goals and six assists which offers the hope of a return to the top level but which also complicates OM’s task.

Why is it a complicated issue for OM

After his nice rebound at Getafe, Mason Greenwood is also mentioned in the sights of several Italian clubs (Juve, Lazio, Naples) or Portuguese (Benfica). The Athletic also specifies that exchanges between the two clubs are only just beginning and that the financial question has not yet been raised.

Manchester would prefer to sell him but the option of a new loan would not be ruled out. At the moment T, the OM track is not particularly advanced and remains at the stage of interest and information gathering.
