It started Wednesday evening, and it will now be every day at nightfall: the Lyon InCity tower will light up daily for an hour and a half, to announce the next day’s air quality in Greater Lyon. LED lighting will now display daily color coded from green to red, green to crimson.

These LEDs – economical, they consume the equivalent of a T2 apartment – were installed by the Atmo air observatory, in partnership with the City of Lyon, Greater Lyon, and the agreement of the Caisse d’ Epargne, owner of the premises.

“It’s about firstly attracting attention and then redirecting people to a behavior change guide” begins the president of Atmo, Eric Fournier, alongside Sébastien Couraud, head of the pulmonology department at Lyon Sud hospital. “We inhale 10,000 liters of air per day which our lungs filter and which become clogged. Pollution causes 40,000 deaths per year.

The president of the Métropole de Lyon emphasized the fact that “Pollution is THE crucial subject, and we are approaching the WHO thresholds.”

The Metropolis is also working with Atmo to complete, next year, the number of air quality sensors in the territory, increasing it from 13 today to around fifty.
