The fires gained intensity yesterday north of Port-Cartier. Fortunately, it is progressing in the opposite direction of the houses. The few bits of rain this Wednesday morning will not be enough. What reassures Mayor Alain Thibault is the significant deployment of Sopfeu staff, including specialists.

These competent people inform us quickly, commented the mayor of Port-Cartier in an interview on Arsenal Media’s Plaisir 94.1 radio. “To have specialists from Sopfeu, but also from Public Health, our Fire Safety, the Sûreté du Québec, it’s certainly reassuring. We want Mother Nature to be on our side,” declares Alain Thibault.

Still a state of emergency

He focuses on what we can control. The mayor appreciates the transparency of Sopfeu, which monitors fires regularly. As we cannot control the direction of the winds, the city of Port-Cartier remains in a state of emergency since Friday and will remain so until July 3.

“We ask our people to prepare a 72-hour kit, with medicines, linen, pets and everything they need… If the situation deteriorates, we must be ready to evacuate,” summarizes the mayor .

As part of the emergency measures plan established by council resolution until July 3, Alain Thibault inherits the power to order evacuations. He plans to issue notice if the case requires it. The City of Port-Cartier will publish two updates each day on its Facebook page.
