Peace negotiations between the Colombian government and the Guevarist ELN guerrillas resume on Tuesday, after a ten-month break. A Swiss diplomat takes part in the work of the “Peace Dialogue Table”.

“The peace negotiations, however, find themselves in a difficult situation”

Philipp Lustenberger, the Swiss special envoy for the peace process in Colombia.

Discussions are scheduled to last until November 25. Delegations from the government of President Gustavo Petro and the National Liberation Army (ELN) hope to achieve “the greatest progress,” they said in a joint statement.

The Lucerne diplomat always sits at the negotiating table when the Bogota government negotiates with the ELN or other guerrilla movements. Switzerland is in fact one of the four European states which are supporting the talks, with Germany, Spain and Sweden. These States essentially have an observer role. (sda/ats)
