A 92-year-old man was charged on Wednesday, accused of raping and then killing a woman in 1967 in the southwest of England. New forensic examinations made it possible to relaunch the investigation in 2023.

A 92-year-old man has been arrested and charged with the murder and rape of a woman in 1967 in the Bristol area, in the southwest of England, British police announced this Wednesday, November 20.

Louisa Dunne, 75, was found dead, strangled, at her home in Easton by a neighbor on June 28, 1967. The investigation showed that she had been raped. The police have launched numerous appeals for witnesses in recent years.

A new hearing this Thursday

The case saw a twist in 2023, with new forensic examinations, police said. Ryland Headley, a 92-year-old man, was arrested this Tuesday morning and charged.

“This is an extremely important moment in a horrific and shocking case that has remained unsolved for almost six decades,” said investigation lead Dave Marchant in a statement.

“We are absolutely determined to continue a thorough investigation to try to provide Louisa’s loved ones with the answers they have been waiting for all their lives,” he added.

Ryland Headley was presented to court on video from the police station on Wednesday morning. He only confirmed his identity, his date of birth, his address, and to say that he understood that the hearing was taking place as if he were physically present. The nonagenarian will remain in police custody until Thursday, when a new hearing is due to take place.
