Jonathan David scored in the 74th minute to help Canada defeat a South American nation for the first time in 24 years at a tournament. The Reds defeated the Peruvians 1-0 at the Copa América on Tuesday in Kansas City.

Peru were outnumbered after Miguel Araujo was shown a red card in the 59th minute for a spike tackle on Jacob Shaffelburg. Video review was necessary to make the decision.

Canada recorded its first victory in four games under American head coach Jesse Marsch, hired last month.

Their last victory against a South American club was a 2-0 victory over Colombia in the Gold Cup final in 2000.

David’s goal, his 27th for the national team, ended a 391-minute scoring streak. Twenty-six of his goals came in competitive matches.

This victory is very important. It means that we have everything we need for the last match of Group A against Chile to continue our journey.said David. It was a difficult match, but we found a way to get the three points.

The match was interrupted during first-half stoppage time when an assistant referee running in the unshaded part of the stadium collapsed and required medical attention. He got up briefly and was carried off the field on a stretcher.

In its first appearance at the Copa América, Canada (1-1) bounced back from a 2-0 loss to defending champion Argentina. Peru began its journey with a 0-0 draw against Chile.

The Canadians will play their final game of the preliminary tournament against the Chileans on Saturday in Orlando. The same day, Peru (0-1-1) will face Argentina in Miami Gardens. The top two teams in the standings will then advance to the quarterfinals.

Peru reached the semi-finals in 2021 before losing to Brazil. He did not hit the target for the ninth time in his last 12 games.

David scored when Cyle Larin passed the ball to Shaffelburg, who delivered it to him on the other side of the field. David took two touches and beat goalkeeper Pedro Gallese near the penalty spot by sending the ball to the far post.

Quebec goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau made a diving save during second-half added time, then blocked a free kick to maintain Canada’s lead.
