For two years, the Association des sports de vents des Îles (ASVÎ) has been working to establish a network of weather stations that will transmit, in real time, data on wind and temperature, among other things.

For the moment, theASVI installed five weather stations: at Pointe de Grande-Entrée, at Anse-aux-Baleiniers, at Pont du Dtrait, at Portage du Cap and on the Havre-aux-Basques lagoon.

These stations provide real-time readings of several data, including wind, temperature, atmospheric pressure and precipitation. This data will be accessible on a web application which will be launched on July 4.

In addition to these five stations, there are three private weather stations, located at Pointe-Basse, Gros Cap and near the Étang-du-Nord fishermen’s wharf, which their owners have agreed to integrate into the network.

The ASVÎ coordinator, Judith Landry, however mentions that the objective is to add new weather stations in the coming years. We do a lot of mileage by kite, wing or windsurf to see the fine weather conditions on a site or beach, she explains.

The only weather station in the archipelago was until now located at the airport.

It really didn’t give us any idea of what was happening at Grande-Entrée or Havre-Aubert. It made us move around because we said to ourselves yeah, maybe… and sometimes there’s no wind. From now on, we won’t need to do that anymore.

Some data from these private stations may be less precise, according to Judith Landry, since theASVI does not control the quality of installations. We know that for some of them, the data is not going to be super good for certain wind ranges, she explains, but for other wind ranges, it’s going to be really excellent.

Judith Landry estimates that the cost of this first phase is approximately $35,000. L’ASVI managed to obtain funding from the Municipality of the Islands, Tourisme Îles-de-la-Madeleine, the Attention FragÎles organization, the committee ZIP and the Quebec Kite Federation.

The web application will be available from July 4. A launch party is also planned for this date at L’île Café-Buvette, in a five to seven format.

New parking at the Detroit Bridge

This year we had a great victory. It’s been several years in the making, but today it’s coming to fruition.lance Judith Landry.

Since June 21, a new parking lot has been accessible at Pont du Détroit, a site appreciated by kitesurfing enthusiasts.

We’re really happy with that. This is a step forward for the safety of all users in this sector.

Previously, people parked along Route 199, where the speed limit is 90 km/h, with passing zones and the Route verte also passing there and it was really super dangerous. But since there was work, we were able to arrange with the Municipality to take over an MTQ storage area.

L’ASVI also asks the population to no longer park along the road, for the safety of other motorists and cyclists.

Judith Landry adds that the work ofASVI aims to reduce the impact of wind sports enthusiasts on their environment.

There is a lot of pressure on public lands and we are aware of itshe mentions, while adding that she knows well that, if there is a nice east wind, everyone will end up in the same place.
