MEP Valérie Hayer, member of Emmanuel Macron’s Renaissance party, was re-elected this Tuesday president of the Renew Europe group (centrists and liberals). The elected official from Saint-Denis-d’Anjou was the only candidate and was re-elected by acclamation during a meeting of the group.

“We will fight against the scourge of political and economic populism which infects European politics”

Renew Europe, which was the third force in the outgoing hemicycle with 102 MEPs, now has only 74, and is overtaken by the group of European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR, radical right and extreme right), which displays currently 83 elected officials.

“Despite a difficult European campaign, we collectively showed our resistance. We would, of course, have liked to have been more numerous in this room. But I believe in our capacity to attract, and we are working on it”said Valérie Hayer during the meeting, adding: “Voters asked us to transform Europe from within and defend their interests: I am committed to working towards this.”

The Mayenne MEP was head of the list in the European elections for President Emmanuel Macron’s camp, which suffered a heavy defeat, with 14.6% of the vote, against the National Rally which won more than 31% of the vote.
