A former club member at the heart of a major conflict

Promoted to La Liga with Espanyol Barcelona after the Catalans’ victory in the final of the promotion phase, Martin Braithwaite does not know where he will play next season. One year from the end of his contract, the former TFC player has clearly put pressure on his leaders, after his magnificent season in Liga 2.

Seven years ago, Martin Braithwaite left TFC to discover the Championship (English 2nd division) by signing for Middlesbrough. The experience was ultimately inconclusive (8 goals in 36 matches) since the player was loaned twice during the winter transfer windows to Bordeaux and then to Leganes. The Dane transferred to the Spanish club in 2019, and after only 6 months he joined FC Barcelona to everyone’s surprise. The striker will spend 2 and a half years with the Blaugrana, including a great Champions League campaign in 2020-2021, with 3 goals in 6 games. Since the summer of 2022, the Danish international (70 caps, 10 goals) has played for Espanyol Barcelona, ​​where he demonstrates all his scoring qualities.

Towards a conflict between Braithwaite and Espanyol?

In Liga2 this season following the club’s decline last year, Martin Braithwaite had a great season to allow his club to return to the elite of the Spanish championship. Not called up with his selection for the Euro, the center forward nevertheless finished top scorer in the championship with 22 goals and 3 assists. Questioned after the final whistle of the second leg of the La Liga promotion finals yesterday (2-0 victory against Real Oviedo), the former Toulouse player, under contract until 2025, clearly put pressure on his leaders. “A year ago, the proposal the club made to me (to extend for one season, editor’s note) was a lack of respect. We’ll see if Espanyol wants me to continue,” said the 33-year-old on Liga TV.

With these statements, Braithwaite shows that he is ready to clash with his club, and that he will certainly be attentive to the proposals that will be made to him this summer.
