The Biarritz Film Festival unveils its prize list revealed

The festival dedicated to new voices in international cinema, the Biarritz Film Festival – Nouvelles Vagues, of which Fnac was a partner, ended on Sunday June 23 and revealed its prize list.

The jury, chaired by Léa Mysius (The Five Devils) thus awarded the Grand Prix to the film Girls Will Be Girlsby Indian director Shuchi Talati, who succeeds A Song Sung Blue (2023) by Geng Zihan, Grand Prize of the first edition of the Biarritz Film Festival – Nouvelles Vagues. Girls Will be Girls follows the relationship between a mother and her daughter (a student at an elite boarding school in the Himalayas), as the discovery of desire sows trouble in their relationship. The film will be available in French cinemas from August 21, 2024.

Concerning the other awards, the French genre film, Eat the Night by Caroline Poggi and Jonathan Vinel, particularly stood out, obtaining the Jury Prize and the Student Jury Prize. As his lookby Thierry de Peretti, left with the Special Mention of the Jury and The Night drags, directed by Michiel Blanchart, received the Audience Award.

Actress Saoirse Ronan awarded

Concerning the Interpretation Prize, the actress Saoirse Ronan was awarded for her performance in The Outrun by Nora Fingscheidt, who also won the Pass Culture Jury Prize. In The Outrun — also selected at the Sundance Film Festival – Saoirse Ronan plays a woman eager to return to the wild islands of northern Scotland where she grew up, after several years of excess in London.

The actress continues to be particularly present in independent cinema, after the success of Brooklyn (2015), Lady Bird (2017), Doctor March’s Daughters (2019), The French Dispatch (2021) or even Foe (2023). The Outrun is expected in French theaters from October 2, 2024.

The Biarritz Film Festival – Nouvelles Vagues has once again dedicated daring and ambitious cinema proposals, which leave room for a new youth eager to express themselves and make their voices heard.

In addition to the winners, this second edition was notably marked by its prestigious guests, including Alain Chabat, Matt Dillon, Alice Diop, Pierre Niney, Karla Sofía Gascón, and Noémie Merlant.
