Nearly 700 demonstrators gathered on the site of the Saint-Sauvant megabasin project, in Vienne, reported France Bleu Poitou on Saturday November 16, according to an estimate from the police. The demonstrators claim around a thousand participants. Anti-basin activists have undertaken to build an observatory for the little bustard, a protected species of bird, indicates the France Bleu Poitou reporter on site. Several police vehicles are also present.

The Vienne prefecture indicated, on Saturday evening, its intention to file a complaint for “unauthorized entry into a private, rural or forestry exploitation, with physically marked limits, and for the degradation of crops”. Several orders had been taken before this demonstration, specifies France Bleu Poitou. The wearing and transport of protective equipment by demonstrators is, for example, prohibited. Two departmental roads are also closed until the end of the demonstration.

Disputes are increasing in the region around water, particularly against mega-basin projects, irrigation reserves promoted by the State and contested by environmentalist associations. In the spring, a decree reduced the time limit for filing an appeal in this area, with the government committing at the same time to accelerating storage projects.
