The Paillon promenade in Nice has been extended since this weekend of June 22 with the opening to the public of the “Belvédère de Bourgada”, a section of the green corridor gained from the former national theater.

The city of Nice inaugurated the “Belvédère de Bourgada” this Saturday, June 22. This 5,000m² green space with 150 trees and shrubs was developed after the demolition of the national theater to extend the Paillon promenade.

Umbrella pines, olive trees, holm oaks, and almond trees were favored to recreate the atmosphere of a Mediterranean terraced garden. A rainwater recovery system has been set up for watering plants, with a storage capacity of 600 m³.

Many residents have come to walk this new section of the Paillon promenade and realize the work accomplished. “We saw the arrival of the green flow in 2013. The evolution and this continuity is sublime,” reacts Virginie at the microphone of BFM Nice Côte d’Azur.

“It was useful to extend this walk which stopped abruptly at a not very beautiful building. This will later allow us to go to the exhibition center and join Avenue de la Libération,” adds Richard.

New sections to come

Within a year, the city of Nice wishes to extend the Paillon promenade to the north, i.e. a kilometer of green corridor between the Bourgada crossing and the Monnet crossing opposite the exhibition center, on the edge of the Europe square.

Other landscaping projects will continue in the coming months: the streets on either side of the park (boulevard Risso, avenues Saint-Sébastien, Saint-Jean Baptiste and Gaillieni) as well as the crossroads will be reclassified.

In order to accommodate widened sidewalks, a two-way cycle path (on both sides of the park), a roadway and a bus lane accommodating the new high-level of service bus line.

This work carried out in the city center on busy roads caused discontent among residents this fall.

This overall project costs 75 million euros, financed by the city and half by the State and the region.
