Canada’s men’s sevens team finished second in Pool B on Saturday at the World Rugby Sevens Repechage in Monaco, and will face Chile in the quarter-finals.
The team started Saturday with a victory against China. With Shan Changshun giving China a 14-0 lead, Canada responded with five straight tries, four of which were converted by Cooper Coats. Captain Phil Berna opened the scoring for Canada, and Thomas Isherwood scored between the posts to put Canada back on track at halftime.
A long sprint from Alex Russell at the start of the second half gave Canada the lead. Josiah Morra and Ethan Hager added a try each to give Canada a 33-14 victory.
Canada’s final group match was against Great Britain. Great Britain scored first, but a Berna try, converted by Coats, gave Canada a 7-5 lead. Great Britain scored just before halftime to lead 12-7. the break, and increased its lead to 17-7 at the start of the second half.
Great Britain’s Ross McCann received a yellow card with two minutes remaining in the match, and Canada immediately took advantage with a try from Hager to cut the lead to 17-12. Canada continued to push, and Berna almost scored, but was held back by the British, who maintained their lead and won.
Canada’s men’s sevens team will face Chile in the quarterfinals on Sunday, June 23 at 3:43 a.m. PST / 6:43 a.m. EST. The semi-finals and finals will follow, and the winner of the final will secure the only remaining place for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. You can watch all the matches live on RugbyPass TV.
