What did the first spectators think of “Plastic Guns”, the new comedy by Jean-Christophe Meurisse, loosely inspired by the Dupont de Ligonnès affair?

Released this Wednesday, June 26th in theaters, has Plastic Guns convinced its first viewers? While it gets an average of 2.8 out of 5 from the press (26 reviews), and 3.5 out of 5 from the public, thanks to the 85 people* who have rated it to date (including 36 reviews), here is a small selection of viewer opinions.

Plastic Guns is a very, very free adaptation of this affair which is said to “fascinate” the French and is the subject of the wildest “fantasies” about what has become of this man who has been missing for years.

Dare to make a comedy on this subject, then! That’s the whole gamble of this crazy film, to be reserved for a mature audience, because of “a scene of great violence [pouvant] offend a sensitive audience“, as we can read alongside the film’s “all audiences with warning” classification. As in Blood Oranges, Jean-Christophe Meurisse’s previous production, the humor is caustic, and at times, bordering on disturbing. .

This new production by Jean-Christophe Meurisse (founder of the troupe Les Chiens de Navarre) fully embraces the genre of black comedy, clearly looking towards the Coen brothers.

They liked

Magba (4 / 5) : “Same structure as Blood Oranges: we laugh a lot at the beginning and not at all at the end… Very rhythmic for 45 minutes, a slight hesitation then it starts again. This comedy around the famous news item makes us laugh bitterly about judicial errors and human nature ready to skid at any moment.

Chris G (3,5 / 5) : “Daring black comedy, very well directed and excellently well played from the main roles to the secondary roles. The very well-documented scabrous news item on Ligonnès is a pretext to laugh blackly at the monstrosity. Special mention to the role of the concierge attached to our investigative duo, for a guaranteed laugh.

Camille Moingeon (4 / 5) : “A gem, a total treat! Bravo to JC Meurisse and his troupe of geniuses of improv and the wacky who explore like no one else the faults and madness of men and society, this film does a world of good and it has a wickedly powerful cathartic effect which is very welcome at the moment! We laugh a lot, the line-up of actors and especially actresses is geniiale, there are scenes that will become cult, finally, I saw the comedy of the year! GO FOR IT

They liked it less

khesanh76 (2 / 5) : “This film is divided into a series of sketches that go in all directions. What is astonishing in this film is the degree of hysteria of the actors (…) These are not dialogues, they are screams! In short, it’s very disjointed….and ultimately not really funny!!!

CINÉ FEEL (2/5): “The same mechanics as in the previous opus, Oranges Sanguines, but without the social background or the emotion. A series of sketches and acting numbers that quickly runs out of steam, filmed flatly, a big problem with the rhythm. In short, despite the excess of the situations and the excellence of the actors, we quickly get bored, with the feeling of having been a little fooled by a crafty director who seeks comfort and ease.
