As our colleagues on the site remind us Actu.frthe facts date back to December 2022. During a municipal council in the commune of Sézanne (Marne), the mayor took the decision to exclude an elected official from the opposition.
A choice that the elected official decided to challenge in court. Thus, last week, the administrative court of Châlons-en-Champagne decided to agree with him and described the mayor's decision as an excess of power. The municipality was ordered to pay 1; 500 euros to the complainant as well as to cancel several deliberations which took place during this exclusion.
The reasons behind this exclusion
The tension between the elected official and the mayor finds its origin in a debate on the allocation of municipal service vehicles. The elected official denounced practices that he considers illegal and abusive regarding their distribution and asked for more transparency. During this meeting, he proposed the establishment of logbooks to monitor their use, but his project was rejected and he was excluded from the discussion.
Frustrated by this situation, the opposition elected official told the site Actu.fr that he regularly felt singled out when it was precisely he who was calling for more transparency. He criticizes the mayor in particular for his refusal to broadcast the municipal council meetings.
