PORTRAIT. Legislative elections 2024: Olivier Taoumi, Les Républicains and National Rally candidate in Guyana

He announced his candidacy on our broadcasts, while he indicated that he had filed an appeal with the Constitutional Council against the decree convening voters for the early legislative elections. Olivier Taoumi, representing Rassemblement National and Les Républicains, explains his journey and his ambitions as part of our series of portraits of candidates for the 2024 legislative elections.

As an LR member, I had the nomination of the RN and the Republicans. I will be the candidate of the alliance for a national unity governmente”, announces Olivier Taoumi. A resident of Rémire-Montjoly, he is “president of the administrative court (on availability)”, he says. A lawyer by training since 2004, he specializes in tax law and customs law.

This former magistrate worked in particular with the current president of the Territorial Collectivity of Guyana, Gabriel Serville, with several municipalities, as well as the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Guyana. This is how he explains his link with the political world. As for the reason for his candidacy, he answers…

Mr. Macron made the whim of a spoiled child by dissolving the National Assembly at a crucial moment for France: we are engaged in the war in Ukraine, we have a public deficit and we have the Olympic Games, to complete the picture . As the French are extremely unhappy with the president and the dissolution, the president’s party collapses and will be in the minority.

According to the LR/RN representative, “the French will have the choice between the left, the extreme left with Mélenchon, and the union of the rights with Bardella at its head, it will be a binary choice“, he said without pronouncing the term extreme right. And added: “I cannot accept that France is governed by Mélenchon who is an autocrat.

Four themes are at the heart of Olivier Taoumi’s campaign. First, the fight against the high cost of living”I am going to propose an intelligent and progressive exit from dock dues“, announces the candidate. Then insecurity, the lawyer wishes”strengthen the resources of the State in Guyana so that the Justice and police can do their work properly“.

He also mentions the exploitation, by Guyana, of its own resources by declaring: “I am going to propose leaving the Hulot law which prohibits us from exploiting oil and the appropriation of our gold by hunting down illegal gold miners.“. Finally, Olivier Taoumi wants to fight against illegal immigration “to better protect regular immigration”. He specifies : “I am in favor of protecting people who are threatened in their lives, those facing sexual or domestic slavery, women and young people.

Guyana suffers from exactly these 4 evils, life is too expensive, justice is clogged, we are deprived of the possibility of exploiting our oil while our neighbors do it and if there is pollution in their home, it will come anyway with us. We don’t see why we should stay under cover and not them. And finally, today there are 40,000 to 50,000 foreigners who returned illegally to Guyana who arrive in ghettos and cannot work because the market cannot accommodate them. Everyone suffers in this situation.

Olivier Taoumi, RN / LR candidate for the legislative elections in Guyana

Olivier Taoumi’s replacement is Monique Guard. In June 2023, she was appointed departmental delegate in Guyana by the National Rally. More than 10 years before, in 2012, the activist was a candidate for the Front de Gauche, the alliance of Jean-Luc Mélenchon and the communists, in the legislative elections. She then received 49 votes and 1.90% of the votes cast.
