The Swiss population is not yet in favor of the introduction of an official third gender, as it exists in Germany. This is what emerges from a survey carried out by Tamedia/20 minutes during the voting weekend of June 9. 57% of those surveyed are against, 39% for and 4% without an opinion.

It is perhaps an effect of Nemo’s victory at Eurovision, and of his militant song for a third sex, opinion has evolved slightly in one year. In March 2023, 62% of people were against, 35% for and 3% without an opinion. Favorable opinions therefore gained four points.

Concerning the 2024 survey, we see that men are more hesitant than women with respectively 62% and 52% negative opinions. Concerning political color, supporters of a third gender are on the left: 67% yes among the socialists, 62% among the Greens and 58% among the Green liberals. On the right, it’s no to the UDC (81%), the PLR (67%) and the Center (59%).

In the cities the gap is smaller with 50% no and 46% yes. While in the countryside it is 59% no to 37% yes. There is also a significant difference in training. People who have studied at university say yes at 52%. Among those leaving compulsory school, the yes drops to 34%.
