the essential
This is the second time that Haute-Garonne hosted the finals of the Occitanie Championships. And after Tournefeuille, it was in Toulouse that regional handball was in the spotlight this weekend. A great success in the end.

900 players, 50 teams and 25 finals, such was the program for this weekend at the Palais et Petit Palais des Sports in Toulouse. For the second consecutive year, after Tournefeuille, this Toulouse edition is a great success for the president of the Occitanie Handball League, Michaël Boutines: “An exceptional meeting with this possibility of exploiting the two Palaces, which was really comfortable . We saw great play, matches with suspense, golden goals among the young people and all this with respect, and that is the most important thing. »

The public responded

The great satisfaction was also the public who responded, and who set the mood, especially yesterday during the last finals. In total, 6,100 people visited the two gymnasiums during these two days. “A real crowd of supporters and it’s good to see them again. It’s a great success, we started measuring it last year in Tournefeuille with nearly 4,500 spectators,” says Michaël Boutines, who is already looking forward to the future. “It gives ideas for the future, yes. We have to have highlights during the season and that is the case with this event. Bringing these clubs together, creating a real atmosphere and that’s what Fenix Toulouse Handball wanted for its 60th anniversary. They knew how to support us and please the kids. »

Big and small shone

But then what happened on the pitch for the department’s clubs? In total, nine Haut-Garonnais clubs were involved in 15 finals. And if unsurprisingly the Fenix, in the men’s U18 D3, and the TFH, in the women’s U13, were crowned, this weekend was also an opportunity to see smaller clubs shine.
This is the case for Villefranche-de-Lauragais, which brings home a trophy thanks to its U15 D3 players, but also especially from Rieux-Volvestre, the nice surprise! The U15 D2 women defeated Aucamville while the U15 D2 boys created the feat by beating Montpellier HB to the golden goal. “Like last year, we have two teams in the final, except this time we are champions. What’s more, against Montpellier, it feels good to beat the big guys, we who come from the countryside,” smiles the president of the Volvestre club.
