Residents living near the Hôtel-Dieu shelter, on Saint-Urbain Street, and the one in Milton Parc wish to be compensated for the inconvenience caused by the presence of these two resources for the homeless.

They are demanding $25,000 from the City of Montreal and the owners of the shelters, claiming that the opening of the shelters has caused abnormal impacts in their neighborhood.

In an interview with TVA Nouvelles, Martine Michaud, a resident of the Milton-Parc sector, mentioned that most of the homeless in her neighborhood had been on the street for several years, that several of them were living with mental health and mental health problems. substance addiction.

“This is chronic homelessness and it’s time we made a difference. Words matter. If we don’t make the difference, we don’t see the solutions. For chronic homelessness, it is not a shelter, it is not emergency accommodation and the City insists on only providing emergency accommodation,” maintains Ms. Michaud.

“These people need care, they need healing, they need to be taken care of. They need to have a place, a home and not to be stashed away in a shelter where, in the morning, they are told: ‘go away, because the shelter has to be cleaned’,” adds -She.

TVA Nouvelles received no response to interview requests sent to the two shelters.
