It’s a return that some have been waiting for. The newspaper The mountain announces this Saturday June 15, 2024 that François Hollande will be a candidate in the legislative elections in his stronghold of Corrèze. Information confirmed by his entourage to AFP and franceinfo. The latter media claims that it “will speak in the coming hours”.

The former socialist president will be a candidate under the PS label, supported by the New Popular Front, in the first constituency of Corrèze. He had already been elected deputy for this constituency between 1997 and 2012, mayor of Tulle from 2001 to 2008 before becoming president. With this announcement, he begins his comeback in politics.

The RN came first in Corrèze

He had already spoken this week on the dissolution of the National Assembly decided by Emmanuel Macron, which occurred, according to him, “at the worst time and in the worst circumstances”.

Note that the RN came first in Corrèze during the European elections on June 9, with a score of 32.58%, followed by the PS with 15.23%.

Tense context

The announcement comes in a tense context on the side of the New Popular Front. While the alliance of the left has only just been sealed, LFI decided last night to exclude from its inauguration deputies well anchored among the Insoumis, such as Raquel Garrido or Alexis Corbière. A decision seen as a “purge” within the party itself and the entire left.

Front against the extreme right

At the call of five unions, the entire left and associations will, however, march together this weekend to stand up against the far right. Between 300,000 and 350,000 participants are expected across the country, including 50,000 to 100,000 today in Paris.
