Once again, Morocco remains a benchmark in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region in terms of protecting the rights of the working class, while Tunisia and Algeria are among the ten worst countries for workers worldwide in 2024.

In the ITUC index of workers’ rights in the world, published Wednesday June 12 by the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), Morocco does as well as countries like Australia, Belgium, Canada or Switzerland, all ranked in category 3 on a scale of 1 (“sporadic rights violations” of workers) to 5 (“no guarantee of rights”).

With the exception of Morocco, all countries in the MENA region are in the red with an average score of 4.74, compared to 4.25 in 2014, the date of the launch of this index which examines guarantees of workers’ rights.

The ITUC also considers Europe to be the region in the world where the greatest deterioration of workers’ rights has been recorded over the last decade. “Europe, despite its reputation as a global standard bearer for workers’ rights, saw its average score increase from 2.56 to 2.73 between 2023 and 2024”deplores the ITUC.

“This continued degradation indicates that the European social model (…) is being actively dismantled by governments and businesses, at an accelerating pace”deplored the world organization.

The International Trade Union Confederation brings together 340 unions from 169 countries and territories. Since 2014, it has published its world rights index annually.
