Small Cities of Character were born in in the mid-1970s from a desire not to see the rich heritage of small historic towns disappear which were once religious, political, military, commercial centers…

The creation of Petites Cités de Caractère® responds to a desire to unite and support these municipalities which all have the same objective of placing their heritage at the heart of their development project.

“Telling the city” project

To facilitate the discovery of the cities of Cantal for visitors, the Cantal and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes associations offer discovery trails, in compliance with a national charter: with a guide papier “Discovering heritage” available at the town hall or tourist office or with a digital map for each city.

The visitor is thus invited, to go from point of interest A to point of interest B, not to follow a signposted route, but to stroll and stroll through alleys, small squares… Wandering in a heritage setting , historical and landscape is firstly the result of work carried out on the living environment for the inhabitants and regular users of the city, then offered to tourists.

Digital map

Following on from the paper format, a digital map will therefore be produced for each municipality. The first digital cards of Cantal will be available from spring 2025, on the websites of municipalities and tourist offices. The objective of this new tool will be to help visitors look at the Small Cities of Character in their diversity, in order to improve the understanding and discovery of each municipality.

To create these digital maps, the plans of the Cantal cities were produced by a young illustrator architect from the Region, Laura Catheline from Atelier Passage.
