According to provisional results, the Carougeois accepted on Sunday by 58.35% of the votes the credit of 74.5 million francs intended to build a new aquatic center at Fontenette. The work is due to begin in June 2025 and will last three years.

The new aquatic center aims to meet high demand, particularly from swimmers in a canton that lacks public swimming pools. For the Carouge authorities, the other swimming pool in the town, at the Pervenches school, is not enough for a town of 23,000 inhabitants, which is why they launched an architectural competition in 2018.

Three indoor pools – for sport and learning of 25 meters, for entertainment and for leisure – will be built. They will be added to the four current outdoor pools, of which the 50 meter one will be equipped with a thermal cover to extend the summer season. As the summer swimming pool buildings are dilapidated, new premises will notably accommodate a refreshment bar-restaurant.

Considering this construction credit too high, the UDC launched a referendum with the support of the PLR. The referendums believe that this infrastructure, which will benefit adjacent municipalities and neighboring France, should not have been financed only by Carouge.
