The Matous Landes association in Mons, created in 2002, works for the animal cause. Mireille Frédière, the president for five years, admits to being overwhelmed by the situation. “I am receiving more and more calls from people complaining about stray, unidentified, unsterilized cats. Our association already does a lot, drawing on its own funds, but we cannot solve all the problems! »

The association receives 6,000 euros in annual subsidies from Mont-de-Marsan Agglomération. “If we take into account an average price of 60 euros per sterilization procedure (and this is an average) this allows us to sterilize 100 cats per year,” explains Mireille Frédière. In 2024, we are already at 300! Not counting the additional acts to the operation. When you take in an injured cat, you have to take good care of it! »

A danger to take into account

The president recalls that according to the police powers conferred on mayors, an animal in a state of wandering is under his responsibility, according to articles L.2212-1 and L.2212-2 of the General Code of Local Authorities. “One of the ways to manage this problem is to set up a pound or ensure the sterilization of stray cats,” underlines the president, who insists.

“The mayor can make this decision!” I got an interview with Jean-Pierre Allais, the mayor of Laglorieuse (died a few months ago, Editor's note), who wanted to organize a meeting to present the project for a removable enclosure on serviced land used to centralize stray cats. Because these cats present a danger. They attack domestic animals when they want to enter homes to eat. They also attack people, especially the elderly, and scratch and bite. It happened again recently. They transmit diseases.”

Mireille Frédière hopes to meet an elected official soon to air her grievances. The association also offers cats for adoption: 250 have been placed in 2024. Matous Landes accepts donations, can provide Cerfa and tax receipts, for a nice tax-deductible gesture.
