In Paris, it has never rained so much in October in the 21st century

follows the main lines of the French meteorological report. As in the rest of the country in October there was a lot of rain, there was a lack of sunshine and temperatures were higher than normal for the season, according to records from the official Météo reference station. located at Parc Montsouris, in the 14th arrondissement.

It is in the area of precipitation that the last month attracts attention. While the water surplus nationwide reaches 40%, it is remarkably high in the capital. Paris records 137% more rain than usual. This is almost two and a half times more than the seasonal norm. In total, 131 mm fell, or 131 liters of water per square meter, compared to 55 mm on average at that time.

According to data provided by the Infoclimat association, this is the fifth wettest month of October in the city since records began in the early 1870s, which also makes the station of Paris one of the oldest in the world with such reliability. We have to go back to 1981, more than forty years ago, to find any trace of a rainier October. Never in the 21st century has so much water fallen in Paris during the month of October.

More than a month of rain in one day as the remnants of Hurricane Kirk pass

But these rains were concentrated mainly over short periods. One day clearly stands out, that of Wednesday October 9. As the remnants of Hurricane Kirk hit France, Paris received 70.8 mm, or nearly 71 liters per square meter. That's 1.3 times more in a single day than the average for the entire month. Such an accumulation makes this date the 7th wettest day in the entire history of records in Paris.

The other two wettest days are Thursday 17 with 27.7 mm and Monday 7 with 11.3 mm. These days alone add up to almost 110 mm out of the 131 that fell in October. The rest is distributed in small quantities over the rest of the month, knowing that nine days saw a total absence of precipitation.

Here too, as for the rest of France, this excess precipitation is correlated with a deficit of sunshine. The sun was only out for 97 hours and 57 minutes in October. This corresponds to a shortfall of 17%, close to 20% nationally. Six days even had zero minutes of sunshine. Fifteen days were sunny for less than an hour.

High minimum temperatures

Finally, despite these conditions, October 2024 is a new month which ends with a temperature above normal for the season. The average maximum temperature reached 17.4°C compared to the expected 16.5°C, a difference of +0.9°C. This is less than the national difference which is +1.6°C. But, as across the country, minimum temperatures were significantly higher than usual. They are 11.5°C on average, compared to 9.9°C normally, a difference of +1.6°C. The hottest day took place on Wednesday 16th with a peak of 25.9°C; the coolest was yesterday, Thursday, with a peak of 11.6°C, almost 5°C below the norm.

In the next ten days, Paris should experience stable weather, with little or no rain, with a maximum temperature often around 15°C, or even a little higher. This would be around 4°C warmer than normal. Because of the fog which should continue to be present often, the sun should however continue to play hide and seek.
