While some cities have locations without street names, others have the opposite problem, with repeating street namest. This is mainly the case of new municipalities, in other words municipalities created from the grouping of several towns or villages. In Seine-et-Marne, Moret-Loing-et-Orvanne is the perfect example.

Four streets of the Church, two streets of Sisley

Made up of five delegated municipalities, formerly separate, which are Moret-sur-Loing, Veneux-les-Sablons, Écuelles, Épisy and Montarlot, the municipality thus found itself with 40 duplicate odonyms (and not 75, as mentioned in an article dated November 2023), or more concretely, traffic lanes with similar names.

This concerns in particular four streets from the Churchtwo streets of the Republic, or two streets of the painter Sisley.

A situation which generates a certain number of difficulties, particularly for themail delivery and packages, even if The post office now allows the name of the delegated municipality to be mentioned via a specific line on the postal address.

To remedy this problem, a reflection was launched by the municipal team, in conjunction with the residents, for several months.

On October 26, a public meeting was organized to discuss this subject. But above all, a questionnaire was sent to a panel of just under 1,000 administereda quarter of which quickly sent their responses to this consultation.

The document mentions the person’s address, the type of problems they encountered (mail/parcel never arrived or delivered to the same address in another delegated municipality; or even difficulties locating on a website), the level of concern following these problems, or even the level of acceptability if it is strongly considered that certain streets change their names.

“More complicated to change than to tolerate the situation”

“We have not yet analyzed all the questionnaires, but what emerges for the moment is that certain duplicate streets will probably not be affected by a name change, because the people themselves consider that it would be more difficult to make a change than to endure the current situation,” explains Jean-Philippe Fontugnedeputy mayor of Écuelles and deputy in charge of citizen participation.

However, the elected official assures him, decisions will be taken on a case-by-case basis: “If we take the example of Chemin Vert, there is one in Moret and one in Écuelles, but in that of Écuelles, there is a house, but no address, so we probably won’t change anything. We also have the case of rue Montrichard in Moret and allée Montrichard in Veneux. This only concerns three people in Veneux, so we will discuss it with them to find out whether or not they want a change.”

Finally, for potential new street names, different avenues will be explored by the consultation committees (set up soon), made up of elected officials, learned citizens, town hall technicians and members of the associative world.

“For certain streets, it is possible to only change the channel name : one could become an avenue, while the other will remain a street. For others, it will be more complicated to do this and it may be necessary to launch a more extensive consultation,” concludes Jean-Philippe Fontugne.
