The drama took place this Saturday, October 19 in Verberie located in the Oise department, reports Le Parisien. A 77-year-old man was killed with a chainsaw by his neighbor, on the very day of his birthday, our colleagues point out.
According to a source within the gendarmerie, the suspect is a schizophrenic who has stopped treatment.
The gendarmes, alerted by witnesses, found the suspect “stained in blood” on site who told investigators “to have killed his neighbor using a chainsaw”, said Senlis prosecutor Loïc Abrial in a press release.
The reasons which motivated his action are not yet known, but it could be a neighborhood conflict.
A figure of the community
The victim, Jean-Louis Gaillet, a retired butler, was well known to the 4,000 inhabitants of this Picardy town. He was notably president of the commune’s Festival Committee, indicates France 3, and participated in the 2020 municipal elections.
The accused hospitalized, his police custody lifted
A murder investigation was opened and entrusted to the Senlis research brigade, with the support of the Amiens Research Section (Somme). An autopsy is scheduled for early this week.
The thirty-year-old who had to be hospitalized and whose police custody was lifted according to Courrier Picard, has already been sentenced in particular for aggravated violence in 2019 and had completed serving his sentence.
