Huge blunder at Télévision. For a segment devoted to the return of Superman on the big screen, the 8 p.m. news broadcast a fake video produced by AI.

Since the rise in popularity of generative AI tools, we have had to learn to be extra vigilant with sounds, texts, images or videos found on the Internet.

This weekend, the 8 p.m. news on France 2 paid the price by broadcasting, undoubtedly by mistake, false images of “Superman”, generated by an AI.

It didn’t go unnoticed

The blunder quickly made the rounds on social networks, to the point of reaching the ears of James Gunn. The famous director is at the head of the creation of the new DC universe in cinema, of which Superman will be one of the obvious figures.

On X, formerly Twitter, the director reacted to the segment in question with a fairly explicit emotion, a vomiting emoji.

Where do the France 2 images come from?

Just do a quick search on YouTube to find the video used by the France 2 teams to illustrate their segment. This is the video “ SUPERMAN: LEGACY – First Trailer (2025) David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan » published on April 3, 2024 and which has garnered more than 700,000 views.

The description states that it is “ our “first trailer” concept for the upcoming DC Studios film, SUPERMAN: LEGACY (2025) ».

If we put aside the obvious use of generative AI to make this fake trailer, nothing in the description explicitly indicates that this is a video made by fans with no connection to the official film.

This is in fact the specialty of the Screen Culture channel and its 1.18 million subscribers: “ Screen Culture » is the trailer channel “Concept/Fan-Made” sparkling and extravagant designs from various cinematic universes such as Marvel, DC, Star Wars and many more ».

A Bad TV Habit

Here France 2 has fallen into the unfortunately usual flaws of television. If television channels do not hesitate to use their rights to upload videos to YouTube, they have the hypocrisy of using the Internet as a breeding ground for images that would be free of rights.

This is not the first time that a television news program has dug into YouTube or websites to provide illustrations, without explicitly crediting the sources. At no time does France 2 specify where its fake trailer was found.

And that’s the whole problem. By completely omitting the source, France 2 passes off its fake trailer as a real one. If the channel had correctly cited the YouTube video, it could have taken refuge behind this pretext by explaining that there is a need for illustrations and that James Gunn has not yet released any trailer for his next film.
