Why will the Avenue des Champs-Élysées be closed to traffic this Sunday?

Eight years since the Champs-Élysées have been reserved for pedestrians one Sunday per month. However, this month will be very special: a giant picnic will take place on the historic axis of the capital, planning to welcome nearly 4,000 participants chosen at random.

Are you used to Sunday walks on the Champs? This Sunday, May 26, nearly four thousand happy elected Parisians and Ile-de-France residents will be able to have lunch on one of the most famous streets in the world during a large picnic organized by the Champs-Élysées Committee, in partnership with LG Electronics.

From dawn, 4,212 m2 a gigantic red and white checkered tablecloth will be deployed on 216 meters of paving stones, along the artery, from Place de l’Etoile to Avenue George V. A tablecloth made in France and assembled in our region, in Drancy, in Seine-Saint-Denis.

They were “more than 250,000” to have registered according to the organizers for the draw, now closed, in search of a place to have a peaceful lunch on one of the squares. A meal basket prepared on site for two people will be distributed free of charge to participants during two services , the first at noon, as well as the second at two p.m.

The remaining meal baskets will be redistributed during maraudes the same evening

The Missing Link, an association fighting against waste and food insecurity from Île-de-France will collect undistributed baskets. “The remaining meal baskets will be redistributed during their maraudings the same evening“, specify the organizers.

A prominent guest of honor will take part in the event: Guillaume Gomez, chef and ambassador of French gastronomy, known for having directed the kitchens of the Élysée for twenty-five years.

Eight restaurateurs, including four chefs, will officiate during the two services in the various pop-up kitchens located on the avenue. They will offer menus “varied“, specific to their “culinary identity“, including a vegetarian formula according to our colleagues from France Bleu Paris, partners of the event.

A meticulous organization to allow all participants to benefit from their free meal basket. Preparations will take place during the night from Saturday to Sunday to allow the unfolding of the tablecloth at six o’clock on Sunday morning.

Only one fear for the organizers, the particularly unstable weather this year, the spring of which could become the rainiest in the last fifteen years. “For the moment, there is no rain forecast“, they say, outlining the absence of a plan B.

The Champs-Élysées Committee is not its first attempt at this type of event. Last year, more than 5,000 people gathered for the largest dictation in the world on the famous avenue, a record registered in the Guinness Book.
