Joal-Fadiouth October 13 (APS) – Ambassadors of the European Union and representatives of member states of “Team Europe” paid tribute, Saturday in Joal-Fadiouth, rural women through the GIE Mboga Yaay, noted the APS.

The event which was held on Saturday in the presence of a delegation from “Team Europe”, led by the ambassador of the European Union to Senegal, Jean-Marc Pisani, is part of the celebration of the Day International Conference of Rural Women, scheduled for next Tuesday.

”The EU, through its development policies and programs, places women at the heart of its initiatives to eliminate poverty in rural areas. We recognize that women play a key role in sustainable agriculture and the resilience of local communities,” underlined Jean-Marc Pisani during the tribute ceremony.

“These women grouped within the “Tefess” (coastal in Wolof) project, funded by the EU and implemented by the NGO Nebeday, promote a sustainable local economy that respects the environment,” he welcomed. .

“This concerns in particular the promotion of agroforestry, the valorization of non-timber forest products, the fight against deforestation with the production of eco-coal,” he specified.

The diplomat recalled that the elimination of poverty is an absolute priority for the EU. “The effects of climate change are factors that contribute to the vulnerability of many people,” he noted.

Mr. Pisani indicated that “rural development programs financed by the EU aim to promote gender equality and improve women’s access to economic resources while respecting the environment”.

According to him, ”achieving the empowerment of women is a fundamental element in the fight against extreme poverty, hunger and malnutrition. The elimination of poverty requires integrated measures.

Representatives of EU member states, local authorities and women’s groups took part in the ceremony.
