To do this, the field of transport is one of the first levers activated. As the Smart City Expo approaches, which will take place from November 5 to 7 in Barcelona, ​​a ranking of 10 European capitals with the most ecological transport has been achieved.

The French capital in sixth position in the ranking

Not surprisingly, it is London which comes at the top of this ranking. With its excellent public transport network, including 335 electric buses, its more than 12,000 bicycles self-service accessible in 800 stations and its objective of being without emissions by 2035, the English city will stand out as a true model on a European scale. Amsterdam and its large number of cycle paths, comes in second place. Vienna completes the podium. Then there are Berlin, Helsinki, ParisOslo, Andorra, Brussels and Luxembourg make up the rest of the top 10 and therefore stand out from other European cities by their ambitions more durable in terms of transport.

A gradual evolution of modes of transport in Europe

However, the majority of Europeans remain attached to the car. According to Ipsos data, in 2023, 87% own a car and 84% use it daily. 70% of motorists would not feel ready to stop using this mode of transport. On the other hand, the electric bike seems to be carving out an important path and is anchoring itself in the daily lives of Europeans since one in five households has one. Concerned about their environmental footprint, 18-34 year olds favor gentler modes of mobility: 72 % of them prioritize public transport and 50% use the bicycle.
