“A big scientific question”

The earth had already shook in the area on October 4 and 6, each time twice, even causing cracks in a building whose inhabitants had been evacuated.

Questioned by Le Télégramme, Éric Beucler, member of the Laboratory of Planetology and Geosciences and director of Universe Sciences at the University of , indicates that the country of Vannes is “an area that is monitored quite regularly. Already in February 2021, a series of small tremors had been felt in this same sector“. And to specify: “We are here on the South Armorican shear. There was a plate boundary 350 million years ago. Here, near the route of the current dual carriageway, there is the trace of a fault but the border between the two tectonic plates has long since closed. So we are here on a big scientific question“.

The earthquake on Friday evening, with a magnitude of 2.9 on the Richter scale, caused a dull noise, particularly near Ploeren, its epicenter, six kilometers from Vannes. It was felt in several municipalities in the region: Meucon, Questembert, Saint-Avé, even going so far as to be felt in the Auray region (Brech, Pluneret, Plougoumelen and of course Saint-Goustan…) hour, this earthquake is the highest recorded this week in the country of Vannes. The territory experienced its most significant earthquake in November 2013, with a magnitude of 4.6 recorded between Meucon and Grand-Champ.
