In office since April 11, 2024, the head of the center Pierre Baumlin has taken stock of the Saint-Brevin-les-Pins (-Atlantique) fire and rescue center for 6 months.

The captain has already welcomed four new professional firefighters and he plans to integrate three recruits next year to be able to count on 16 professional firefighters in total on site.

Towards a guard posted at night

“This increase in numbers will mainly be used to set up the night guard,” explains Pierre Baumlin. Currently, we only have volunteer firefighters on call for the night, so at home. From 2025, professionals will reinforce the center on guard duty at night.”

At the same time, the buildings will be rehabilitated and one extension will be carried out to offer a good working tool in correlation with the increase in numbers.

The establishment of the post guard requires a sleeping place adequate which is not the case today.

“And extension project of buildings will be launched in 2025. The building plan is not completely finished to date. The land is the property of the town hall. They will be handed over to the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (Sdis) which will manage the work,” continues the center manager.

While waiting to have an overview of the future extension of the premises, the installation of temporary sleeping accommodation will make it possible to manage this transition phase. “We do not yet have an exact date for the installation of the modulars. The post guard will be put in place gradually, initially on certain days of the week.”

New volunteers expected

Currently, 60 volunteer firefighters dedicate themselves every day to helping the Brévinois.

When he took office, the captain spoke of the wish to have 80 volunteers in the long term.

“We are having recruitment difficulties. Our volunteer firefighters are getting older and young people are having a little trouble finding accommodation nearby. Saint-Michel-Chef-Chef has a center. Saint-Père too, just like Saint-Nazaire… The resource is reduced,” confides Pierre Baumlin.

A call is launched to all people who would like to invest in the population.

The head of the center reminds us that we should not hesitate to come and meet them. “An officer from the center is responsible for recruiting volunteer firefighters. He receives the person and explains the advantages, the constraints, the life of a volunteer firefighter. He is also planning a half-day of discovery at the center. This allows you to spend time here and talk with the firefighters present.”
