Following a major solar flare, the Northern Lights were observed during the night of Thursday October 10 to Friday October 11 in a large part of France, including the Hautes-Alpes.
During the night of Thursday October 10 to Friday October 11 in the Hautes-Alpes and almost everywhere in France, warm-colored Northern Lights could be observed. From Briançon to Gap, the phenomenon amazed more than one and some residents shared their photos of the show on social networks.
These northern lights are linked to the arrival in the Earth’s magnetic field of particles emitted by a recent solar flare. Class G4 geomagnetic activity was recorded, which explains the good visibility and extent of the phenomenon last night.
The sun is currently near or even at its peak of activity in its cycle which lasts 11 years. The phenomenon could repeat itself several times in the coming months and starting next night.
In mid-September, the French sky had already seen the formation of the Northern Lights. A spectacle which was then immortalized by several Internet users.
