SENEGAL-AGRICULTURE-CLIMAT / Bambey: a climate change adaptation project launched for the benefit of producers – Senegalese press agency

Bambey, Oct 10 (APS) – The Decentralized Fund pilot project in support of adaptation actions carried out by the communities of Bambey and surrounding areas was launched on Thursday, with the aim of combating the harmful consequences of climate change on agricultural yields.

This project, initiated by the Regional Union of Peasant Associations of Diourbel (URAPD), with the technical and financial support of the NGO Oxfam and Action solidaire international (ASI), will intervene mainly in the commune of Ngoye, during its phase pilot.

“As producers, we are the first victims of the effects of climate change with a drop in agricultural yields,” indicated the secretary general of URAPD, Elimane Diouf.

As part of this project, he declared, URAPD intends to carry out a certain number of initiatives, such as assisted natural regeneration, the establishment of an organic fertilizer manufacturing unit and market gardening areas. .

According to him, these adaptation initiatives developed at the grassroots aim to combat the consequences of climate change in rural areas.

He announced that these actions will be multiplied in other villages in the Diourbel region.

Khar Ndiaye, director of the NGO Oxfam in Senegal, specifies that the implementation of these adaptation initiatives aims to reduce the impact of this phenomenon on the vulnerability of rural populations.

She maintains that “communities affected by the effects of climate change have the knowledge needed to build resilience” to this phenomenon.

According to Ms. Ndiaye, the choice of the commune of Ngoye to host the pilot phase of this project is explained by the increased poverty of the soils, the rainfall deficit and the salinization of the soils which affect agriculture and livestock in this area. .

The Oxfam Senegal director also pleaded for polluting countries to pay for the harmful effects of climate change.
