After the renovation of the facade and its interiors between 2016 and 2019, the Grand Théâtre must once again undergo work. This time it will be a question of completely reviewing the machinery system of the Geneva opera. The construction site is planned between the beginning of 2026 and the beginning of 2027. Consequently, the performance hall will be closed during this period. The cultural programming will mainly take place in the Motive Forces Building.

The Council of State has transmitted to the Grand Council a bill for a credit of 8 million francs, indicates the cantonal Executive. Other contributions from the Fondation du Grand Théâtre, the intercommunal fund and the City of Geneva will be added to reach the 44.5 million budgeted for the work.

Shortly after its reopening at the beginning of 2019, technical problems were identified, particularly with the stage machinery, which seized up after three years of shutdown due to the renovation of the building. Since 2021, studies have been underway to replace them, as well as to reinforce the backstage and backstage slabs, bring the fire safety devices into compliance and improve the acoustics of the room.
