It is a precious reservoir of Genevan history which is accessible to all. The “Memorial” of the Municipal Council of the City of Geneva has documented the debates taking place in the hemicycle since 1842. A resource accessible to everyone, but you still need to know it and master the workings of online research.

To help you, a visit and then a conference-workshop are taking place this Thursday, October 10 at the Cité municipal library from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Upon registrationthis free event will allow those interested to learn how to rummage through one hundred and eighty-two years of political archives.

This still represents in a cabinet the equivalent of “17 linear meters”, specifies Jorge Gajardo, collaborator of the Municipal Council Service, in a press release, or the equivalent of the height of a building. He works with his colleagues in the department’s offices, at the corner of Rue du Stand, Rue de l’Arquebuse and Rue de la Coulouvrenière.

Transcribe the debates and the atmosphere

Over the years and the complexity of parliamentary work (and the urban development of the city), the size of the Memorial has greatly increased. Based on notes from municipal sessions, a raw transcription is constructed, which is then completed. Today, video also provides support, and the plenary sessions can also be viewed on the municipal council websitewhich has just had a makeover.

“We have to reflect the atmosphere of the session with its incidents, including, sometimes, a few bad words,” explains Cathy Macia, who is part of the Memorial’s team of four editors.

Thursday, the service Question of the city’s libraries will show how these archives are used to answer questions from the public.

This conference-workshop takes place as part of Democracy Week, organized every year since 2015 by the State Chancellery of the canton of Geneva. The theme of the 2024 edition is “Cultivating democracy”.
