Washington – The fruitful partnership, which has long linked Morocco to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group, was celebrated Wednesday evening, during a ceremony at the initiative of the embassy of the Kingdom in Washington, marking the 1st anniversary of the holding, in Marrakech, of the annual meetings of the two international financial institutions.

In a speech during this ceremony, in the presence of administrators and senior officials of the two institutions, including the deputy managing director of the IMF, Gita Gopinath and the executive director of the World Bank, Syed Tauqir Hussain Shah, the Moroccan ambassador to United States, Youssef Amrani welcomed the “tremendous success” of these assemblies, which reflects the “long-standing partnership” between Morocco and the Bretton Woods institutions.

The diplomat also welcomed the progress made to improve the representation of Southern countries within the IMF, citing the decision to grant Africa a third seat on the Board of Directors of the Fund, which is able to to contribute, he said, to remedying the growing wealth gap between rich and developing countries.

Speaking on this occasion, Ms. Gopinath expressed the thanks and recognition of the International Monetary Fund in Morocco, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, for the distinguished organization of the assemblies in Marrakech, stressing that they were “the best ever held outside Washington.”

Along the same lines, Mr. Hussain Shah said he was “impressed” by the organization of this conclave which brought together several thousand participants, just a few weeks after the earthquake which struck the Al-Haouz region, making tribute to Morocco’s capacity to successfully organize such high-level events.

The Annual Meetings of the IMF and the World Bank Group brought together approximately 14,000 participants representing 189 delegations, including finance and development ministers, senior officials of the two global financial institutions, central bank governors, parliamentarians, officials from the private sector, as well as representatives of civil society organizations and academics.
