The new President of the Republic of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, was honored by the prestigious Time magazine by appearing among the 100 leaders of tomorrow. At just 44 years old, Faye became the youngest president in Senegal’s history, a remarkable political rise that attracted international attention.
Time magazine, in this selection, does not rank the nominees, but highlights influential figures in various fields. Among these 100 emerging figures, more than half are women, and Bassirou Diomaye Faye, newly elected Senegalese leader, is one of the rare African representatives on this list. Marine Tondelier, the leader of the French environmentalist party Europe Écologie Les Verts, is also among the nominees.

The political rise of Bassirou Diomaye Faye was marked by a series of singular events. A former tax inspector, Faye was released from prison just 10 days before winning the Senegalese presidential election with 54% of the vote. His mentor, Ousmane Sonko, prevented from running due to legal proceedings, had nominated him as candidate for his party, PASTEF. Faye thus took the reins of a country plagued by growing political tensions, symbolizing for many a victory for Senegalese democracy.
However, his tenure was not without obstacles. Six months after his election, Bassirou Diomaye Faye was forced to call early legislative elections, hoping to obtain a parliamentary majority to be able to implement his economic reforms and his fight against corruption. The vote, scheduled for November 17, will be crucial for the future of his mandate.

On an international scale, other emerging figures such as Sabrina Carpenter, American actress and singer, Aaron Pierre, British actor, and Jaylen Brown, NBA player, are also honored by Time. Despite their varied backgrounds, all of these figures, including Bassirou Diomaye Faye, are recognized for their growing influence and their ability to shape the future in their respective fields.
This recognition from Time magazine establishes Bassirou Diomaye Faye as one of the leaders to follow closely, not only in Senegal, but also on the international scene.
