With the PlayStation 5 Pro, one of the promises is also to enjoy its PS4 games which become more beautiful thanks to an option. To see how much better the visual rendering is, we tested a few titles still stuck on Sony's previous console to determine how significant the improvement is or not.
It's not just PS5 games that are improved on PS5 Pro. In addition to beautifying titles that have received a dedicated update, the new version of the PlayStation 5 is also capable of making PS4 games more beautifuland this without even a patch created by the developers. In the PS5 Pro menus, more precisely in Screen and video then Video output, we find an option entitled “Improve the image quality of PS4 games” which speaks for itself and which can be activated at will. If you're wondering why this feature isn't enabled as standard, it's because Sony says it can cause “unexpected behavior” and can be disabled in the event of a problem.
Taking this into account, we decided to try this feature on the rare popular PS4 games that have still not been entitled to ports, remasters and other patches on PS5. Even if there are not many, we still set our sights on two titles that fall into this category and that's good, they perfectly illustrate two aspects of this option. We therefore chose to try Bloodborne and Red Dead Redemption II on PS5 Proand we'll start with the exclusivity of From Software blocked on PS4 to the great dismay of players.
PS5 Pro, best way to play Bloodborne?
At the time of its release, Bloodborne was already not known for being one of the best-looking games on the PS4 from a technical point of viewas is often the case with From Software games. Obviously, the title still stands out for its sumptuous artistic direction, but that does not prevent it from'we didn't enjoy it in the best conditions because of its graphics and its frequency of 30 frames per second. With the arrival of this feature of the PS5 Pro, it's an excellent opportunity to rediscover the game in a better light, but does it really change things?
With this option activated, Bloodborne gains very slightly in visual quality. When we look closer, we see that the image is sharper and finer, surely thanks to the smoothing of PSSR, Playstation Spectral Super Resolution which is a technology that uses AI to improve the resolution. But hey, we're not going to lie to each other, it does not cause a radical change to the naked eyehowever when we activate and deactivate the functionality, we still see a slight difference. Unfortunately, this does not change the frequency which remains at 30 frames per second which still appears more stable on PS5 Pro than on PS4. So it's not a radical change, and yet playing Bloodborne on PS5 Pro with the option enabled remains the best way to enjoy From Software's PS4 exclusivity at the moment.
Red Dead Redemption instead needs a PS5 patch
If we could see a slight improvement on Bloodborne, we unfortunately cannot say the same for Red Dead Redemption 2. Whether with the image enhancement feature of PS4 games activated or not, it's difficult to see the slightest difference with the naked eye. In reality, we're not too surprised because Rockstar's game was already one of the most beautiful on the console as it was optimized, so the PS5 Pro can't do much more as it stands. Finally, it is better to wait for the deployment of a real PS5 patch so that Rockstar's game can be improved on Sony's latest console.
Conclusion: Is PS5 Pro the best way to play PS4 games?
After trying two iconic PS4 titles, we can conclude that the image enhancement option of the PS5 Pro is very circumstantial. On certain technically perfectible games like Bloodborne we perceive a clearer image, while on graphic standards like Red Dead Redemption it is much less obviously. If this option will therefore not boost your PS4 games so that they suddenly start looking like PS5 gamesit still remains appreciable if you still have many games to play on the previous Sony console. Despite this really slight visual improvement, the PS5 Pro is therefore the best support for enjoying your PS4 games currently.
