Vietnam promotes cooperative relations with Canada, Belgium

During his meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Tô Lâm affirmed that Vietnam attaches great importance to the comprehensive partnership with Canada. He thanked Canada for providing 560,000 Canadian dollars (415,000 USD) to help Vietnam overcome the consequences of the recent Typhoon Yagi.

Congratulating Canada on its accession to the presidency of the Group of Seven (G7), Tô Lâm specified that Vietnam would continue to contribute, together with Canada and the G7 member countries, to the cooperation contents of the group, including the green growth and sustainable development.

In order to promote the comprehensive partnership between the two countries, Party General Secretary and President Tô Lâm proposed that the two sides increase exchanges of high-level delegations and at all levels; improve the effectiveness of existing bilateral dialogue mechanisms; effectively explore the opportunities provided by the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) to make economic, trade and investment cooperation increasingly substantive and effective; strengthen cooperation to respond to climate change and actively coordinate and support each other in multilateral forums, notably the United Nations (UN) and La Francophonie.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau affirmed that Canada takes its relations with Vietnam in high consideration and will continue to promote the Comprehensive Partnership in priority areas, including politics – diplomacy, economy – trade, defense, education – training and exchanges between people and support Vietnam’s participation in United Nations peacekeeping operations.

Leader Tô Lâm proposed that Justin Trudeau and the Canadian government continue to create favorable conditions for the Vietnamese community to live and work in Canada.

The Canadian Prime Minister highlighted the role of the Vietnamese student community in Canada in the development of relations between the two countries.

On this occasion, Tô Lâm invited Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to visit Vietnam at an appropriate time. The invitation was happily accepted.

Increase exchanges of Vietnam – Belgium delegations

During the meeting with Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, Party General Secretary and President Tô Lâm said his country still values ​​traditional friendship and cooperation with Belgium, an important member of the European Union (EU). and the French-speaking community.

He highly appreciated the fact that the Belgian Parliament adopted the resolution on supporting Vietnamese victims of Agent in October 2023, hoping that Belgium will continue to support Vietnam in overcoming the consequences of the war, especially by supporting victims of Agent Orange.

He asked Belgium to soon complete the ratification process of the Vietnam-European Union Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA); to support the European Commission to soon remove the IUU (illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing) “yellow card” against Vietnam’s seafood; to strengthen development cooperation and cooperation in the fields of renewable energies, logistics services, high technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), green development, education – training, cultural exchanges.

The Belgian Prime Minister shared the damage caused by Typhoon Yagi in Vietnam; accepted leader Tô Lâm’s proposal that the two countries would strengthen cooperation to respond to climate change.

The two leaders agreed to increase exchanges of delegations at all levels. They also affirmed the continuation of closely coordinating and supporting each other in multilateral forums and international organizations.

The two Prime Ministers of Canada and Belgium and the General Secretary of the Party and President Tô Lâm discussed regional and international issues of common interest, including the guarantee of peace, stability, security and safety and freedom of navigation and overflight in maritime and oceanic areas, including the East Sea; support for respect for international law; the resolution of disputes by peaceful means, in accordance with international law, in particular the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
