A cyclist met a horrible end on Tuesday afternoon, fatally crushed by the wheels of an agricultural tractor, in Calixa-Lavallée, near Verchères, in Montérégie.
The tragedy occurred just before dinner time, directly in front of the municipality’s town hall, on Chemin de la Beauce.
As of mid-afternoon, the circumstances surrounding the accident between the cyclist and the agricultural vehicle pulling a trailer were not yet known.
“We know that the cyclist was traveling to the right of the agricultural vehicle. But who made the maneuver that led to the accident? This is what we are trying to establish. But the cyclist passed under the wheels,” indicated Sergeant Jean-Luc Tremblay, spokesperson for the Richelieu Saint-Laurent intermunicipal police agency.
The injuries suffered by the cyclist were so serious that no resuscitation maneuvers were attempted. He was pronounced dead on the spot and his body was covered with a white sheet. The age of the cyclist was not specified by authorities.
The driver of the agricultural tractor remained on the scene following the accident and was to be met by investigators during the afternoon to give his version of the facts.
Police officers trained in collision investigations, assisted by forensic identification technicians, went to the scene of the tragedy in the afternoon to try to establish the cause and circumstances of the fatal accident.
