Maizerets: arson devastates a rooming house

A fire believed to be criminal in nature broke out in a residential rooming house building in the Maizerets district of Quebec early in the night from Friday to Saturday.

Firefighters from the Quebec City Fire Protection Service (SPCIQ) were called to intervene around 11:53 p.m. on Chemin de la Canardière.

Once there, they noticed that a fire had broken out in a bedroom on the ground floor. They therefore carried out a rapid evacuation of the building while they began extinguishing the fire.

The blaze required the intervention of around thirty firefighters. The head of the SPCIQ indicated that the fire was under control around 12:30 a.m.

Fortunately, no one was injured during the response, but due to the fire damage and the ongoing investigation, no occupants were able to re-enter the building.

A civil security representative was therefore on site to ensure that around twenty people were taken care of by the Red Cross.

For their part, Fire Commissioner investigators have reasonable and probable grounds to believe that there was voluntary human intervention. The investigation was therefore transmitted to the SPVQ.
