It’s a old buildinglocated in the town of Vauvert (Gard) et very well known of the Gardois that the Department will completely modernize in the 10 months ahead.
A big bridge over the little river
Built in the 1950s, the site has for several decades been one of the major engineering structures in the east of the Gard and allows thousands of Occitans every day to cross the Little Rhonebetween Aigues-Mortes and Les-Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer.
Long de 155 metersthe site constitutes a very busy place of passage between Gard and the neighboring department of Bouches-du-Rhône.
Two phases
Since Wednesday October 2, 2024, the Sylvéréal bridge, near of Aigues-Mortes and of Vauvert (Gard) is at the center of all the attention of the Department. This link between Occitanie and the Southern Region will undergo a long phase of work. This will take place in two distinct periods.
- Until Friday November 15: repair of all devices support of the structure in order to resume the correct expansion of the deck;
- From Monday December 2, 2024 to Thursday July 24, 2025: repainting of the entire bridge.
During the first period, the bridge will be elevated a few centimetersusing jacks, to release the defective elements, then placed on temporary supports
while the supports will be repaired in the workshop.
2.8 million euros
The last works of this scale date from spring 1987, i.e. more than 37 ans.
The confirmed presence of lead forced the department to proceed with a complete encapsulation of this bridge during the restoration work paint. It’s the color bright red which was chosen by those responsible for this exceptional project.
At the end of summer 2025, the bridge will wear this striking color for decades to come. But, such a project extended over nearly 9 months has a cost. This exceeds the 2.8 million euros dont 2,71 for repainting. Located in both territories, the two departments of Bouches-du-Rhône and Gard co-finance this work equally.
Several days closed
The meticulous coloring work on the structure forced the Gard department to close the bridge to all road traffic for several periods of the painting.
- From 12/02/24 at 8 a.m. to 12/20/24 at 6 p.m.
- From 03/03/25 at 8 a.m. to 03/21/25 at 6 p.m.
- From 04/07/25 at 8 a.m. to 04/28/25 at 6 p.m.
- From 07/03/25 at 8 a.m. to 07/24/25 at 6 p.m.
Next Tuesday, October 22 and November 13, the presence of vehicles will be prohibited on the bridge between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
” Of the very precise deviations will be put in place during each period when driving on this bridge is prohibited. Until the end of the project planned for summer 2025, we invite the Gardois and road users to the greatest caution when approaching the construction site», concludes the Department of Gard in a recent press release.
