The Gard departmental council inaugurated this Thursday, October 3, the new Sumène wastewater treatment plant (STEP), located at the entrance to the village on the Ganges road. This installation, with a capacity of 1,200 inhabitants equivalent, is designed to handle loads and flows until 2045. “This sizing will make it possible to accept occasional overloads while awaiting the rehabilitation of the networks,” indicates the local authority.

Access to water, a future challenge in Gard

This project is part of the “Water and Climate: let’s prepare for the future” approach, supported by the departmental council since 2018. This aims to anticipate the impacts of climate change on access to quality water for all inhabitants of the Gard region.

“Like major structuring projects, our “Water and Climate” approach illustrates the desire of the Departmental Assembly to develop harmoniously and sustainably the territories and to organize itself to deal with present and future environmental upheavals. », declared Françoise Laurent-Perrigot, president of the departmental council. “As such, a partnership of objectives and means was concluded with the Water Agency (period 2019-2024) to jointly assist operations of departmental interest in terms of drinking water supply and sanitation. »

A 2.7 million euro project

The construction of this treatment plant was made possible thanks to a partnership between the departmental council, the Water Agency and the State. They financed 52.6% of the total cost of 2.7 million euros. The companies SAUR, Cévennes BTP, Serra et fils and Triaire Frères took care of the work, under the project management of the Entech firm.
