The boom of the lifting crane at the Grands Montets construction site in Chamonix split in two on Tuesday. No injuries were reported. The workers witnessed the scene, while a de-icing operation was in progress, without understanding the reasons for the incident, at more than 3,200 m altitude. The piece of crane hit the Grands Montet needle, triggering rockfalls, which fortunately did not hit anyone.
However, repercussions are expected on the progress of the 150 million euro project. The crane, currently unusable, is essential to the work, carried out by the Municipality of Chamonix and the Compagnie du Mont-Blanc.
The harsh climatic conditions at this altitude in the Mont-Blanc massif could be one of the explanations for the incident. Wind gusts of 132 km/h were recorded overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday at the Aiguille du Midi.
