Two people died, one is between life and death and two others suffered minor injuries, during a most likely arson fire which ravaged a residential and commercial building in Old Montreal, very early Friday morning, learned the QMI Agency.

According to our information, the five victims were on the upper floors of the burned building, in Airbnb type accommodation.

What’s more, the owner of the building would be Emile Benamor, the same man who owned the Place d’Youville building inside which seven people lost their lives in March 2023, during an arson attack in the Old Town. -Montreal.

The flames started a little after 2:30 a.m. in a building located on rue Notre-Dame Est, near the intersection of rue Bonsecours.

The fire quickly spread throughout the building and around forty people had to be evacuated. More than 125 firefighters were still on site Friday morning battling the blaze.

It could be an arson, according to our information, but the authorities still refused to confirm it this morning.

According to police sources, two people lost their lives during the major fire, while another was in hospital in critical condition. Finally, two people reportedly suffered minor injuries.

The investigation aimed at establishing the circumstances of this tragedy was entrusted to major crimes investigators from the Montreal police.
