Dakar, May 4 (APS) – Women gathered within the Citizen Consultation Framework for the respect and preservation of the rights of women and girls launched a manifesto to demand greater representation of women in government bodies.

”The announcement on April 5 of the composition of the government with a very low participation rate of women (13.3%), created a feeling of disappointment, with only four women in a team of twenty-five ministers and five secretaries of State,” they declared.

They spoke during a meeting they held on Saturday at the auditorium of the Place of African Remembrance in Dakar.

According to them, the under-representation of women in the first government team of the new authorities constitutes a ”threat to the achievements in terms of women’s rights already consolidated in Senegal”.

In its manifesto, the collective expressed its astonishment at the “abolition of the Ministry of Women”, without “this measure being accompanied by the creation of a specific structure responsible for women’s social and economic development policies”. .

In the government of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, the terminology Women no longer appears in the name of the ministry which now bears the name of Ministry of Family and Solidarity.

The collective also called on the President of the Republic Bassirou Diomaye Faye to facilitate the creation of a government structure “intended specifically for the needs of women and girls”, and the implementation of policies and programs in their favor. favor, ”particularly in the sector of education, training, employment, prevention and treatment of gender-based violence.
