Thanks to new solar pumping installations in eastern Senegal, farmers will be able to irrigate their crops more efficiently and sustainably.

The Kédougou region, located in eastern Senegal, has marked a decisive step in access to technologies through the “commissioning of ten solar pumping systems”, aimed at supporting local agriculture, indicates the Community Economic Affairs of West African States (ECOWAS) in a press release received Thursday at APA. Led by the NGO SEM Fund, this project benefited from the financial and technical support of the Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency of ECOWAS (ECREEE), within the framework of the Special Intervention Fund (ESIF) of this organization community.

The new facilities will benefit farmers in the communities of Bandafassi, Damboucoye, Andiel, Ibel, Bantata, Bembou, Diakha Madina, Faraba 1, Faraba 2 and Diakhaba. They will improve crop irrigation while strengthening resilience to climate challenges, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in terms of access to clean energy.

The inauguration ceremonies, organized on October 1 and 2 in Damboucoye and Bembou, saw the participation of representatives of the Ministry of Oil and Energy, the Senegalese Rural Electrification Agency (ASER), CEREEE and local communities. The director of Renewable Energy Development, El Hadji Ndiaye, chaired the meetings in the presence of the main program manager of ECREEE, Mawufemo Modjinou.

This project launched in Kédougou is part of a series of similar initiatives led by ECREEE across West Africa in 2024, with clean energy systems installed in Nigeria, Gambia, Cabo Verde, Ghana and Togo, covering various sectors ranging from irrigation to the electrification of hospitals, recalls ECOWAS.
